Although often referred to as "S-O-B 2nd Class" and the "the Big Tailed Beast", the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver entered service as a front line dive bomber in November 1943 with VB-17 aboard the USS Bunker Hill. It was significantly faster than the Douglas SBD "Dauntless" it replaced, and quickly earned the respect and admiration of its pilots.
